4 . Define and Consider Intended Audience
Audience means the person or people a text is created for; a frequently used synonym is readers. This is who you want to inform or persuade about your topic.
For most college assignments, your audience is your instructor and possibly your classmates. However, some assignments will ask you to write for other audiences, real or imagined. Identify your audience, and then learn as much as you can about their background, their knowledge about your topic, and their existing attitudes.
Knowing what audience you are writing for will help you decide what type of language to use (such as technical words), how much background information is required, and what kind of evidence and appeals to use if you want to convince that audience of something. It is sometimes effective to support an argument by connecting it to an audience’s values, beliefs, needs, or sense of reason. This kind of connection is known as an appeal.
Appeals may be divided into five categories: appeals to logic, appeals to character, appeals to emotion, appeals to need, and appeals to value. To learn more about these, read the information that follows.
Kinds of Appeals
Definition: An appeal to logic is an attempt to engage the audience’s intellect. These appeals explicitly or implicitly request that audiences set aside their emotions and focus on a rational assessment of the ideas presented.
Example: “It is only logical that if we fail to educate young people about nutrition, they will make poor dietary choices.”
Key Concept: In academic writing situations, logic is king. When addressing academic audiences, it can be helpful to use phrases that signal an emphasis on reason—phrases such as “this evidence indicates” and “as a result of these conditions.”

8 . Understanding Thesis Statements
A thesis statement is a sentence, typically placed at the end of the introductory paragraph, that expresses the main point of the entire essay. Just as supporting ideas in a paragraph provide evidence or support for the topic sentence, the topic sentences of each paragraph in an essay provide evidence or support for the thesis statement. Because a thesis statement covers the main point of an essay, it must be general enough to cover several paragraphs. Be careful not to make your thesis statement too general, though, because it needs to be specific enough to focus your essay around one particular idea that you will then discuss in the remaining paragraphs.
The type of thesis statement a writer uses is dependent upon the essay’s purpose. For example, a process analysis essay explains how do something or how something works. A thesis in this paper should inform readers of the results that can be obtained by following the steps in the paper. A thesis for one on how to break bad habits might read:
Breaking bad habits can seem impossible, but by following these steps, a person can replace the negative behaviors with good ones.
An argumentative essay makes a debatable claim and supports this claim with sufficient evidence. An argumentative thesis would introduce readers to the topic and stance being presented. In an essay that argues the benefits of homeschooling, the thesis may appear as:
Homeschooling increases a student’s personal growth, allows for the discovery of strengths, weaknesses, and areas of interest, and offers the chance to tailor learning strategies to unique learning needs.

Like a topic sentence, a thesis statement contains two ingredients: (1) the subject that you’re writing about + (2) a controlling idea that expresses your opinion about the subject. Take a look at the following example:

Many of your college essays will require a good thesis statement.

Have you ever listened to someone speak and then asked, “What’s your point?” That desire to know the point is common to everyone, including the people who will read your writing. In a paragraph, the statement that expresses your main point is called a topic sentence.
A topic sentence contains two ingredients: (1) The subject that you’re writing about + (2) An opinion or idea about that subject. Here is an example of how these ingredients come together:

Also, remember that it’s usually best to put the topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph, and to put the supporting ideas—ideas that explain or prove your topic sentence—after it. If you structure your paragraph this way, your readers will have a much easier time following your train of thought.
