Although college can often feel overwhelming, you can chart your own path to success by applying certain skills and habits of mind: Decide what you want, and go get it. Embrace the beliefs and behaviors that will lead to success in college. Become the kind of person who achieves specific goals. Have you ever heard people say things like, “It wasn’t meant to be” or “I’m just taking life as it comes”? Many students are reluctant to believe that they can control their own outcomes through analysis and preparation. Too often ideas about fate can cause us to believe that we possess unchangeable traits and talents, that we achieve things only if luck creates the perfect storm of good fortune. These students are rarely, if ever, bored. They realize that there is no finish line where learning is concerned and that by chasing their own curiosities, they will grow and develop while also having fun. The more they learn, the more wondrous and amazing the world seems to become. In this way, their intellectual curiosity breeds intelligence, wisdom, and understanding. What previously seemed alien or boring steadily becomes more interesting. This person becomes a citizen of every nation, able to discuss nearly any topic, enjoy any form of art, and share in the joys of life in nearly any environment.
